Lockout of the Day: If there’s one thing the NHL is certainly better at than the other three major sports, it’s locking its players out. Not to be outdone by the NBA — who experienced its second work stoppage in 12 years last season — NHL owners agreed at midnight Saturday to shut down operations for the second time in eight years. This also marks the third lockout in the last 20 years, with the last one (2004-05 season) wiping out an entire season. For those of you keeping track at home, yes, Gary Bettman is still the worst commissioner ever. [deadspin]

Facebook just released a new update to its iOS app. Apparently it’s faster. A lot faster. If you use Facebook a lot on your iOS device and complain that it feels slow as molasses and bloated, go give this update a shot. Seems the secret behind this new update is that it’s been built with native code instead of HTML 5. In other words, the new app isn’t a website pretending to be an app. Facebook 5.0 for iOS should be available in the App Store now.

Unnecessary Adaptation of the Day: ALF the movie is happening.
Jordan Kerner, the guy who produced the big-screen adaptation of The Smurfs that made half a billion dollars worldwide, will helm the hybrid CG/live action feature, which will ”explain how ALF got here and put him with a new family.”
And you needn’t worry — actor Paul Fusco has been retained as the voice of ALF.

Alf is getting a remake. Hollywood is out of idea all right
